Kimberly D. Acquaviva, PhD, MSW, is an Associate Professor (with tenure) in the GW School of Nursing (GW SON).

An authority on lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) aging, Dr. Acquaviva serves on the editorial boards of several refereed journals including Sexuality Research and Social Policy, Journal of Gay and Lesbian Social Services, and Journal of Ethnographic & Qualitative Research. She is the former Co-Chair of the American Society on Aging’s LGBT Aging Issues Network (LAIN).

Dr. Acquaviva currently serves as a Special Government Employee (SGE) on the National Advisory Council on Aging (NACA), advising the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the Director of the National Institutes of Health, and the Director of the National Institute on Aging on its mission. Prior to her appointment to the NACA, Dr. Acquaviva completed a two-year term as Chair of the Friends of the National Institute on Aging, a broad-based coalition of almost 50 aging, disease, research, and patient groups supporting the mission of the National Institute on Aging. In her capacity as Chair, Dr. Acquaviva led the coalition in efforts to advocate on behalf of the NIA through the annual congressional budget and appropriations process and promote NIA research activities by sponsoring briefings for congressional staff.

Within GW, Dr. Acquaviva served as a member or chair of the Faculty Search Committee continuously for 8 years, participating in searches resulting in growth of the School of Nursing faculty from 3 full-time faculty members in 2005 to 39 full-time faculty members in 2014. Prior to her appointment as Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs, she was an elected member of the Faculty Senate Executive Committee as well as several Senate committees including the Faculty Senate Committee on Professional Ethics and Academic Freedom, the Faculty Senate Subcommittee on Faculty Code Compliance, and the President’s Council on Diversity and Inclusion.  At the School level, she currently serves as a member of the Appointment, Promotion, and Tenure (APT) Committee.
